No other job follows this linear path

If you are not getting the desired result in professional voice over or audiobook narration, it must be one of the following 4 reasons:

  1. Your voice

  2. Your voice acting

  3. Your recording setup (room + equipment)

  4. Your audio editing skills.

To succeed, you need to understand which of the above issues you have and work towards that. Simple as that.

If you think it is complicated than that, you have a huge learning gap. Let me explain why.

Voice: Some voices are never appropriate for some jobs. It is very easy to evaluate, and I do not think anyone disagrees with it. For example, I have a heavy subcontinent accent. If I think about getting into a voice-over job for an American male voice, I will never make it. It does not matter which software I use or how good my audio is technically.

Voice Acting: The fix for this is simple: Consult with a voice coach. However, pinpointing that you have an acting issue is complex. Sometimes, the audio quality is below standard, and the audio never gets to a point where the acting can be judged. It is far easier to ensure that the audio quality is at the standard level than blindly blaming the acting.

Recording Setup: Any $200 - $300 microphone is good enough for professional-quality audio. However, sometimes the room is not good enough. Unfortunately, many people don’t understand that they have room issues or sound reflection issues. I have seen many of my clients using an expensive microphone or costly software without realizing that their room has some problems. You will get many consultants/audio engineers who would give such feedback with a fee of around $200 to $300. In fact, I do it for my Bundle students or Preset clients. The main point is that it is very cheap to get expert feedback on your recording. So, if you don’t know if your recording quality is okay, then only you are to blame.

Audio editing skills: This is the main issue for many people. Many spend a fair amount of money and time on voice coaching, but their audio quality is not great. Sometimes, they don't know that their audio quality is great, so they work towards the wrong thing. Sometimes, people try to learn everything on their own from free tutorials. Free tutorials are great to get started, but they will never take you to true expertise. There are thousands of reasons for that, but you should just think in this way. What is the benefit of an expert giving all the secrets away for free? If you can answer that, you will know what to do. But sometimes, paid courses are not good enough because of their poor approach to teaching. While there are bad courses, there are also many top-quality courses. You have to try and see which one chimes with you well.
